A Late Night Review on Rebecca

Image
Hello Late Night Watchers! This Late Night Review is on a new film taken from an old tale, Rebecca (2020). Directed by Ben Wheatley, this film is a remake of the classic Hitchcock film made in 1940 which is a telling of Daphne du Maurier's novel but with a darker tone and the tone re-imagined. I had enjoyed Hitchcock's version but was curious what this new remake starring Armie Hammer and Lily James would be like so here we are.  I must say as far as retelling's go this one stayed pretty true to the story...until the end. The film follows an unnamed young woman who meets and falls for the handsome and wealthy Maxim de Winter, a widower. They marry and move into his luxurious estate, Manderley where the now-named Mrs. de Winter struggles to move out of the shadow cast by Maxim's former wife, Rebecca.  In the original story, Mrs. de Winter is aloof and sensitive. In this retelling she has a spine and is very outspoken and doesn't back down easily. I think it's a...

A Late Night Review on Nightcrawler

Image
Hi Late Night Watchers! This week's late night watch was none other than crime thriller Nightcrawler. Written and directed by Dan Gilroy, this intense watch starring Jake Gyllenhaal follows what happens when a thief-turned-cameraman begins to go too far to capture the perfect shot.   Nightcrawler was released in 2014 to favorable reviews. It's a thriller that is equal parts intense as it is creepy. The film introduces us to Lou, who doesn't have a job and gets by from stealing. He witnesses a car crash which is where he sees freelance cameramen film the crash to then sell to news stations. He decides to become a part of it.  Lou as a character is really interesting to watch. Gyllenhaal portrays the character really well and makes him super believable. It's evident that Lou is a sociopath. He doesn't seem to have any regard for human life or boundaries. He films the crimes with ease, never showing any sign of hurt or concern for the victims. In one scene he goes so f...

A Late Night Review of I Am Legend

Image
Hello Late Night Watchers! This week's Late Night Watch is none other than the post-apocalyptic thriller I Am Legend ! Not sure if I had just been living under a rock, but I had never seen this movie until now. Granted, this intense thriller was made back in 2006, an era of my life in which the only movies I knew about were the ones playing on Disney Channel. Thinking back, age 5 me would not have been able to understand and appreciate the story line of I Am Legend .  The story begins with the story of a virus that mutated from a potential cure for cancer and killed 90% of the world's population. 9% turned into mutant zombies called darkseekers that seek to kill and turn the 1% that is immune from the virus. One of the immune is Dr. Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, who is living alone in a deserted Manhattan that has been ruined as he searches for a cure to the virus. His only companion is his dog, Sam, who is a cute German Shepard that follows Neville around loyally. Eve...

A Late Night Review on Bad Samaritan

Image
Hi everyone! So this weeks Late Night Watch is none other than suspenseful thriller Bad Samaritan .   I know: even the poster looks intense. I got this movie recommendation from Tik Tok, an app that I spend a crazy amount of time on. Plot looked interesting so I decided to give it a go. Before we get into what happens, this is the general plot of the film: " A young valet breaks into a man's home and discovers a terrified woman who's chained and gagged. After notifying the police, he soon becomes the target of the psychopath's wrath as he tries to rescue the victim that he left behind." Now this film stars actors such as David Tennant, who plays the aforementioned psychopath, Cale, Robert Sheenan who stars as the protagonist, Sean, and Kerry Condon who stars as Katie, the woman chained up by Tennant's character. It was written by screenwriter Brandon Boyce and directed by Dean Devlin.  Reading the log line before watching, I had a pretty good idea of what t...
